I've recently upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2010 and am now receiving alerts saying that my anti-virus, anti-spam and firewall are not working. Disabling those alerts isn't a solution, because I do want to know if the firewall somehow gets turned off. But I want the alerts to be accurate. Alerts I'm receiving are:

Antispyware is turned off
Firewall is turned off
Antivirus is not installed

I'm getting this error for every computer on the network. I'm also getting an alert that two of the laptops have 'critical Windows updates' but both are up-to-date.

Print sharing from 64-bit Vista to 32-bit XP

I recently bought a new computer and discovered all new computers seem to be loaded with 64 Bit Vista. Everything was going well until I decided to connect my laser printer to my new 64 bit Vista computer - my 32 bit XP Pro systems could see the SHARED printer created with Metwork Magic but could not print to it.

After hours of trying to figure this out, I found an explanation of how to solve this issue, which is a very simple solution.

Here is the link:

http://www.vistax64.com/vista-print-fax-scan/40729-print-sharing-64-bit-vista-32-bit-xp.html

Here is the short explanation:

On the XP machine, create a local printer which uses a Local Port in the form \\Vistamachinename\Printersharename (change the share name on the 64bit machine so it does not have the spaces in it). Select the Epson 32bit driver for the device. NOTE this local print driver willl NOT be shared:

Here is an example that may help explain some of the details left out above - the headings are the TABs of the Property window for the driver that works on XP 32 bit computers:

Mis-handling of Access Points

BACKGROUND
I have a network in my home/office that has the following setup:
1 Netgear DGFV338 ADSL/VPN/WiFi/LAN Router
1 NETgear GS105UK 1GB 5 port switch
1 pair of Netgear Powerline WiFi extenders (WGX102 + X102)
1 Sitecom WL130v1 WiFi network extender
1 Sitecom WL130v1 WiFi access Point
Various laptops/desktop computers, printers and NAS devices

OBSERVATIONS
When I look at the network map all is well until I look at:
FIRSTLY
The Sitecom WL130v1 (192.168.1.58) WiFi access point (wired to router, WiFi to external devices) where NM5.5 reports:
1) The sitecom MAC having the IP address of an external PC
2) Say the computer name is the name of the above PC
3) The Sitecom MAC using Windows XP
4) Only allows a reduced set of device types to allocate
SECONDLY
The Netgear Powerline Extenders which NM5.5 reports as:
1) Having a unique IP address
2) Allows the full set of device types to allocate

QUESTION
A) Why, when the documentation says it does not work with network extenders is NM5.5 working correctly with the Netgear boxes
b) Why, when it access points are an integral part of the network, do NM5.5 incorrectly identify the IP address and think it is a PC with Windows XP?

Dr Watson errors after installing 5.5

Just installed version 5.5.9118-2

Cat 6 hardwire connection to Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit card
Windows XP SP 3
Kaspersky Internet Security v 8.0.0.506
Columbia MD location

Program runs fine but on reboot I get errors and dr watson hangs and I have to go into task manager and kill the dr watson process and then the boot finishes up. What is repeatable is that this sequence occurs on every boot and only started once NM was installed. I'm hoping it's due to some attribute to NM that I can turn off as an option because now my PC won't boot to useful desktop until I kill dr watson by hand.

Alternatives to Network Magic

I have used Network Magic for a long time. I downloaded it, from D-Link, to support a network using a D-Link router. I was/am primarily concerned with knowing when I am connected to the Internet and what devices are connected to my LAN.

I have started to purchase a license several times but backed off after being confused by the license and support requirements. I have 2 LANs at home with separate routers to 2 ISPs. Additionally, each network has 2-10 computers at times running various OSs although WinXP is the most common. Both networks have wired and wireless elements.

I also support several other people with LANs who have similar requirements. Some of these people have used NM but did not like the way the product "modified" their system with it's file sharing features.

I find that LogMeIn provides a reasonable Internet connection indication and will also indicate when other systems are active and connected to the Internet (or at least to the LogMeIn server). Additionally, most of the systems can work with a "free" license. I use LogMeIn for its primary function on only a few systems, but tend to install it on most Windows systems.

I am still looking for a good LAN monitor. I thought that Network Magic would solve this problem. It appears that like WhatsUP before them, the Network Magic people are moving to the enterprise community, leaving the home network user behind. (Note that WhatsUp and WhatsUp Gold started out as a free and low cost network management tool)

Does anyone know of good alternatives?
